The human drama is just spell-binding. I have been watching when I can during these Olympics, here and there. While I generally think the coverage has been good, it can get annoying the way the commentators try to dumb it down for the lowest-common denominator. I think anyone who produces live sports on TV needs to read this great article about the use of silence in sports. As my old broadcast professor used to say. "Nats is king. (natural sound) You can say so much more if you just shut up and let the sound tell the story." The author is so on the money. If you don't believe him, go to the Olympics web site and watch Lindsey Vonn's or Shaun White's gold medal run--with no commentary, just nats. Great Stuff. Last night, we were sitting at the dinner table when we heard this loud !pop! It turns out that one of the cans in a twelve pack of diet coke we had stored outside had frozen, expanded, and exploded. I said I would bring them in in the morning, and promptly forgot. The next morning, we heard a loud BOOM! and looked out the window. A two-liter of coke had now exploded, showering our little back yard in frozen coke. I had to sweep it up with a broom.

Lesson Learned.

Favorite Golf Joke...

Off the seventh tee, Joe sliced his shot deep into a wooded ravine. Don't tell me you don't. Everyone does it; it's healthy. At least that is what I hear. Anyway, a few years ago, when I would Google my name i found other Dustin Dibbles. There is one that was a HS basketball star in Michigan, and now plays for UMKC. And from what I read, is pretty darn good. There is another one in Kansas (who is about my age) and another younger one that races motocross. About half of the first 10 hits were me. I felt pretty good about myself! Out of all the dustin dibbles, I was making something of myself!

And then came April 23, 2006. On that fateful night, one Dustin Dibble of New York City (heretofore unknown to the googleverse) got blitzed with his friends at the bar while watching hockey. After, he stumbled down to the subway (his BAC being more than twice the legal limit), and somehow fell onto the track. He was then struck by the train, and ended up having his leg amputated. So what did he do? The only American thing - He sued! And he won-- $2.3 million from the NYC transit system! As you can imagine, the internet was alive with angry taxpayers and tort reform activists, many of whom disparaged his funny name, as well as his dumb actions. Such was the vitriol directed at dustin, that on urban dictionary, a dibble is "A person that does stupid things without taking responsibility and blames those who have to pay for their consequences."

Now, when you Google "Dustin Dibble" the vast majority are news articles, legal blogs, and angry posts about that Dustin Dibble. So much for me making a name for myself in the Googleverse.
So on behalf of Dustin Dibbles everywhere, thanks a lot Dustin. Thanks a lot.

They Lied...

After viewing the media circus surrounding the death of Micheal Jackson this last week, I kept thinking af a song by one of my favorite bands. "Godspeed" by Anberlin sums up what I was thinking quite nicely. Back when I worked for PCTV, I got the chance to interview the band and I asked them about this song. They said, (paraphrasing) "Imagine the great songs the were still floating around in Kurt Cobain's head when he died. What other musical jems could Elvis have given us? Jim Morrisson? Sid Vicious? All taken early beacuse of drugs and alcohol." I could not agree more. So much potential is lost becasue of substance abuse. I have seen it destroy the lives of memebers of my own family. Here's the video, and the lyrics are posted below- follow along for a great message:

Anberlin - Godspeed

Lyrics:

Burning down neverland (scatter the ashes)
White lines black tar the matches
Is this another death by misadventure?
Tell me what you got, what you really got
Lexington cross your veins
Sleepers can't just wake the dead
When needles and lovers collapse on guilty beds

Fall asleep, don't fall asleep
Don't fall asleep

(They lied when they said the good die young)

THEY LIED WHEN THEY SAID THE GOOD DIE YOUNG!

THEY LIED WHEN THEY SAID THE GOOD DIE YOUNG!
stay with me, stay with me tonight

Burning down bridges now (scatter the ashes)
Godspeed to all your after
Is this a life left just to remember?
Tell them who you were, who you really were
Kill yourself slowly over time, fashion statement suicide
She's still asleep in a Chelsea This is a sad time for a lot of people, because we find out which of our favorite shows have been given the boot because of low ratings. I am really disappointed this year because a really good show is biting the dust, or will be soon--Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles on FOX. TSCC had an OK run --ratings started out strong, but then the strike happened, and the viewers never came back. Then it got moved to friday nights--a death sentence for a drama series.

Which brings me to this rant-- Why can't people wise up? Why can't people enjoy quality programming? I cannot beleive the garbage that draws the ratings these days-- Dancing with the next top model, Who wants to marry my dog?, Are you smarter than the celebrity apprentice?--Why do they air this crap and cancel the good stuff?

Because not only is there an endless supply of foolish idiots willing to degrade themselves in front of a national audience, apparently they are willing to do it for very little money. Reality programming is cheap to make--around 100k to 200k an episode. In contrast, The West Wing, my all time favorite show, cost around $6 Million an episode--as much as a small feature film.

I am uspet because network execs wont even let a show find it's feet. Sienfeld, Friends--None of these shows would have made it today because they would have yanked them after 2 episodes.

TSCC is a brilliant show. You should check it out on DVD when it is released. The character development is nothing short of outstanding. The writers took a tired story about killer robots and turned it into a complicated and profound discussion about the meaning of humanity, religion and technology. It explored deep questions that kept me thinking long after it was over. Can a machine love? What is the nature of the soul? What is the meaning of good and evil? Why do we believe the things we do? I think the biggest problem with the series was it's name--people saw it and said--oh, I've heard that story. Trust me-- you haven't.

You've had this dream right?

I saw this, and I had to post it. Since I don't listen to a wide variety of music, I can't really do a 10 best albums of 2008. I think I only listened to 10 albums in 08! I usually find 5 or 6 albums a year that I love, and I play them to death. So I think I'll do something more my style--the 5 best songs of 08, according to moi. All songs are in the player at the bottom of the page.

5. Spinning--Jack's Mannequin. Off the Glass Passenger album. Great beat, great lyrics, great feel. Very catchy--A very bright spot on an otherwise disappointing album.

4. Help Me-- Alkaline Trio. From Agony and Irony. I got turned on to this when I saw the video, which is so unlike me. I love the chorus- I have yet to see these guys live, but I look forward to the day.

3. Headfirst slide into Cooperstown on a bad bet --Fall Out Boy. From Folie a duex. I posted about this song earlier. Great stuff.

2. Retrace --Anberlin. From New Surrender. Incredible imagery. You can almost see the video in your head, even though there isn't one. Classic Anberlin

1. I Don't Care -- Fall Out Boy. again, from Folie a duex. This song may be overplayed, but I still can't get enough of it. The riff gets in your head and stays there. Love the "ow!"s as well. And with sarcastic lyrics, what else can you ask for ?

.....And Boom Goes The Dynamite

If any of you saw the Oscars last night, you may have missed this little gem by Will Smith:

When I saw it, I busted up! To those of you not in the know, "Boom goes the dynamite" came out of this wonderful video from a Ball State University News Production, and quickly became an internet sensation. Anyway, next time you are fumbling for the right phrase, you can't beat "annnnd boom goes the dynamite." I finally got a chance to read 1776 by David McCullough. I don't read a lot of non-fiction, but I thought I'd give this a try. I'm about halfway through, and I am really liking it. When you are young and in school, learning about the revolutionary war (or any history for that matter) can seem so static. "They won this battle, and then the troops went here, and then the British sailed there, and, oh yeah: "No taxation without representation!" And then it's time to close the books and study math. When you are young you don't realize that these are actual people and things are immensely more complicated. It's so interesting to read about the petty maneuvering, the prejudices, or the way Washington actually felt at certain times. Some of the lesser known moments are fascinating--like the story of Henry Knox dragging 59 cannons (weighing 60 tons) on ox-drawn sleds from Fort Ticonderoga to the siege at Boston. Anyway, If you like American History check it out.

Throw your cameras in the air, and wave them like you just don't care

Can I just say how much I love the X-Games? It's really exciting for me when they come around every six months. There is no doubt in my mind that ESPN is "the worldwide leader in sports" When I was in high school, my dream job was to work at the X-Games. Running camera, editing, directing, I didn't care, as long as I was involved. I think it's so cool that they they spend so much money and spare no expense in bringing extreme sports to the masses. Every year, they have some new and amazing video device to help bring us the action. I love the camera on the cable during the boarder-cross events, the follow cam in the halfpipes, and the myriad of graphics to help explain everything. This year's new toy is the "Mega-mo", like slow motion on steroids. They use a camera that shoots 300 frames a second! (Normal is 30 frames a second) So when they slow the tricks down, it just looks amazing. Being in television, and knowing what it would take to pull off an event such as this makes it even more amazing. It's one of my guiltiest pleasures. I like teenage girl music. That's right. I don't deny it. I like poppy punk rock. Now I know my musical tastes should have evolved past high school, But for some reason, their growth has been retarded. For example, right now I am totally digging the new album from Fall Out Boy. Very good stuff. Take for example, the track "Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown..." (it's on my playlist)-- it's part dance groove, part piano ballad, part driving rock, and with a horn section to boot! Combine that with Patrick Stump's soaring vocals, and you have one heck of a song!

Anyway, I always react with trepidation when people talk music, because I can't really talk about Vampire Weekend or The Arcade Fire or another "grownup" band that someone my age should like. Yes, these bands are good, and I do enjoy them on an ambient level. But for serious rocking out or singing along in the car, Give me my Anberlin or Jack's Mannequin any day.

New Job!

Sorry It's been forever since I've last posted. Things have been crazy. I got a new job back in October, but I have been debating about posting about it for a long time. I finally decided I would, but I would keep It generic--So here' goes. Way back in May, I was on vacation in St. George, playing some golf. Justin emailed me a job, saying, "If I had your TV experience, I'd be all over this." It was a "producer" position at a video streaming company based in American fork. I was familiar with the company, because they did the live, 24-Hour streaming for PCTV. I thought, why not? and I applied--at the very least I could leverage the boss for a raise. I was happy at KJZZ, and I thought things were going well. I never heard anything, and didn't think much about it.

Fast forward to September. Out of the blue this company calls me and schedules an interview. We went through a few interviews, including a tag team 5 on 1 interview. Yikes. Eventually, they made me a great offer--a nice raise for me. I really enjoyed my job, but the future of television is very uncertain right now, and this new company was doing some amazing things. So I took the plunge! But here is the kicker -- 2 weeks after I left, KJZZ laid-off 40 people, and cancelled 2 shows. they also fired the producer of Powerhouse (my old show). Later, I heard through some interns that if I would have stayed, I would have been laid off as well. I am thankful that I made the desision to leave KJZZ, and I feel that the Lord was looking out for me and my family. I am pretty disgusted with KJZZ, and they way they have been managed the last year or so. But that's another post. Anyway, now my commute is about 10 minutes, and I have to fill up about every 3 weeks! I used to spend about $450 a month on gas, and now, well, you get the picture.

So I'm going to try not to blog too much about work, or even mention the company by name. (Wouldn't want to get dooced!) In short, my job is to manage live events as we take them off the airwaves and out them onto the internet. I miss the rush of directing live television, and maybe someday I will get to do that again. But Brandi says I come home happier every day, and the schedule isn't quite as brutal. It certanly is a better environment. In TV, the language is always terrible, and most people are very bitter. At my new place, I think I've heard 5 cusswords since I've been here, and it seems like everyone is in the bisopric of their ward.
I am so thankful to have a good job in this economy.

If it bleeds, It leads...

Ahhh the wonderful month of November. Football, the crisp air, Thanksgiving, ski resorts opening, what a great month. But there is a dark side to November -- sweeps. For those of you who aren't down with the whole TV industry, let me explain. Sweeps are month-long periods during which the advertising rates are set for TV stations and networks. There are sweeps in February, May, July and November. For this reason, stations and networks roll out their best programming during this time, trying to get people to watch. The upside to this is all the great extra programming put on by the networks--like the cool "24 - redemption" that aired this week.

The downside is the ridiculous, fear-mongering, investigative reports put on by the local news stations. When you see stories like -- "20 ways your kitchen can kill you" and "Dangerous Energy drinks" (thanks Fox) you know it's sweeps-- especially with tag lines like "something every parent should see". I have actually heard about stories such as "Is your dog gay?" and "How every time you flush your toilet, your toothbrush is blasted with microscopic bits of poo" and "Mean Girls" (they're gonna beat you up and take your lunch $$! noooo!) in other markets. Or how about "Is your mattress killing you softly?" Oh, and don't forget the "dirty" stories -- dirty hotel rooms, dirty hospital rooms, dirty school cafeterias, anything to make you afraid--and to make you watch.

The one-up-manship and stupitidy of these reports is so annoying--does anyone else get irritated when they hear "part 79 of out series on the dangers of myspace"?

So whenever you see a story like one of these, my friends--just roll your eyes, and say "well duh" and change the channel. Maybe one day news directors will get it.

Just so you know....

Totally.

Dandelion Break

I'm not sure it it's me, but is the news much more depressing lately? I consider myself to be a pretty hardcore news junkie. In a given day, I skim 2 newspapers, usually catch some TV news, I read CNN.com, the Drudge Report, FARK, and a few others. I thought I was desensitized to the sensationalism and fear-mongering. But lately, the news seems to be depressing me a bit more. whether it's the protests outside LDS temples, the impending "Great Depression 2 -- Electric Boogaloo", soldiers dying, the never-ending-din of the bickering between the political right and the left, it's really been getting to me lately. Sometimes, I just want to shut it all out and hold my new daughter. Jurassic Park was one of the first "adult" (not that "adult", you sicko) novels that I ever read. Jurassic Park helped cement my love of novels. I think I read it three or four times, and then I proceeded to devour the rest of his books. Most of his books were made into films, most which did not do the books justice. But what A List! : The Terminal Man, Congo, Eaters of the Dead, Sphere, Rising Sun, Airframe, Timeline, the list goes on. Most of them had a science or medical premise, albeit a fantastical one, and they were always well researched. His imagination was incredible, and he wasn't scared of any subject. He wrote abouteverything from reverse sexual discrimination (Disclosure), to time travel (Timeline), to global warming (State of Fear), to nanotechnology (Prey) (especially creepy). I always looked forward to his next book. I will miss the new and frightening tales that he dreams up. If you're looking for an engrossing read, pick up one of one of his books.

Separating the wheat from the chaff (the chaff being me)

Sup peeps. I am resurrecting this blog once again. I have been posting a little on the Dibble family blog, but we mostly use that for updates about the kids and such (more like an online baby book). So it didn't seem like the place for my little rants and brilliant observations. :p So stay tuned and be sure to add it to your reader. In other words, standby for dibblazo!

When The Cat's Away...

So The Station Manager in San Fransisco for the week. That would explain some interesting behavior that is going on here at Park City television. A few of my coworkers have disappeared during the day, mumbling something about "having a meeting', or "shooting an interview". When quizzed further about their "assignments", my coworkers try to keep a straight face when they tell me they were interviewing "ski patrol on mount Jupiter" which really means they were out enjoying the greatest snow on earth. As today is the last powder day of the season, I am thinking about joining them. Park City received about 7 inches overnight, which is quite rare for the end of march. Endless winter indeed. Today I should be editing an interview i did with Anberlin Last week, but Something has come up. I now have a "meeting" with a mister "jupiter". :-p

Can You Handle The Pressure?

On Saturday Feb 10th, I Shadowed an Elvis (instant replay) Operator at the Utah Jazz game at the Energy Solutions arena (used to be the delta center) I have always wanted to watch from behind the scenes, and I finally got my chance. It was an eye-opening experience. My head was spinning with all of the information I was trying to absorb. It was quite a trip. I don't think I will ever be able to watch a Jazz came the same way ever again. It was amazing to watch the Director, Travis Henderson. He was cool under fire and has such passion for the game. Even with everything that was going on, he still had time to say "Wow!" or "Oh Man!" when Memo hit a big shot or someone had a hard foul. If I can be half that good in my career, I will be happy. It was kind of depressing to come back to my control room with my 3 interns and see just how much I still have to learn. I hope to go back soon and learn more about Directing live television.

Sensationalsim At It's Finest

Seeing as it's been almost a year since I started this blog, I thought I might try this whole thing again. I guess it takes a state/national tragedy to spur me into writing more. What will prolly be known as the "Trolley Square Shootings" happened last night, and Brandi and I had just sat down to watch "Heroes". What happened has awful, but working in television I immediately began following the networks to see how each of the 4 were framing the story. It was interesting to see who of the big 4 stations decided to preempt their programming. Fox Did not Preempt "24" but everyone else broke into their shows to give us live shots of the news orgy that was Trolley square that night. Gosh it was insane. KSL alone had 4 crews there, and yet they only devoted their block A of the 10:oo news to the story. I think KUTV devoted almost their Entire newscast to it. I thought KTVX was particularly sensationalistic in their interviewing the witnesses. What bothered me the most was that none of the media outlets had a clue about what was going on, and virtually all of them ran wild with speculation. "I hate to speculate but.." "I certainly have no evidence to back this up, but..." It was ridiculous. In spite of the horror of what happened, I still had to laugh when Sandra Yi (Reporter for KSL) Walked right into the shot of some KUTV videographer, who did his best to get her out of the shot. I wonder how many reporters ended up inadvertently in another networks shot in the chaos. Anyway, It's A fine line between giving a story the coverage it deserves and crossing that line into sensationalism, and I think some of the networks crossed that line that night.

Joining the digital Revolution

Wow. I heard this thing on the radio the other day about poeple who ask thier friends about their life, and then thier friends would get all huffy and say "Didn't you read my blog?!!" I decided right there that i wanted to get all huffy with my friends too. J/k. I guess we all want to feel like the center of the universe.
